Religious Diversity in America

Perceptions vs. Reality

Objective: "recognize and value the diversity of religions in America"

This is a blended learning activity

In class: Initial perceptions:

  • Students volunteer answers to question about what religions there are in America, including different Christian denominations. Instructor creates list on board.
  • Worksheet is distributed for students to take note of their initial perceptions of religious diversity in America. (completed worksheet is collected, to be returned the next week)
  • Instructor displays demographic information from online resources (The ARDA US "report", reorder by "adherents" and "family")
  • Exercise: Do you know anyone who is...

Online reading: Our US "Religion Stew" and Describing Religious Diversity

Online work: Online resources:

  • View video: America's Religious Diversity (R&E) (can skip minutes 6-14)
  • Complete Self-test ("lesson 3") (be sure to print your completed test before moving on to the "test self-check")
  • Reflect on the questions you got wrong: do you understand why the correct answer is what it is? Do you understand where you went wrong in your thinking?

In Class:

  • Students submit completed self-test with reflections
  • Sharing of issues with the test questions
  • Students revise perceptions on the worksheet from previous week (resubmit for review by instructor)
  • Handout and Discussion (online if not in class): Religion in America: Some Statistics
