"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

The story of religions in America is a story of immigration and assimilation...

It is our ongoing story - mine and yours - past, present and future:

  • Where did we come from? Why did we come?

  • When did we come and where did we settle?

  • What religions did we bring to America?

  • How did we and our religious practice impact on American culture and diversity?

  • What challenges did we face?

  • Were we accepted or rejected by those whose families had arrived in generations past?

  • How did being in America change us and the religions we practiced?

  • How did we and the religions we brought change America?

This course explores 500 years of the history of religion in America as well as perennial issues of debate related to religion in the pluralistic and free country that is America.
