Faith and Food

What does food have to do with faith?
Most religions have guidelines regarding what and when people should eat.
  • Jews maintain a kosher diet
  • Muslims eat Halal (permitted) and avoid Haram (prohibited) foods
  • Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains maintain varying degrees of vegetarian diets
  • Taoists have a recommended diet
  • Mormons and some other Christians also avoid certain foods

Fasting is also a practice found in many religions, done according to various guidelines

Click any of the links on this page to go to a learning activity and to explore these practices, experience and reflect upon them for yourself.

Note: This Halal link will take you to an outside website to complete a series of learning tasks using Web resources (a "Webquest"). The activity is designed for teams of three. If you are working alone you should complete all three topics yourself. Copy and submit three completed worksheets (one for each topic) as well as a report on guidelines for a Halal diet and personal reflections on the diet.
