Bingo
Religion: any
and all Purpose:
to reinforce and test familiarity with terms Cognitive
Skills: knowledge
Learning Styles: verbal,
active
Intelligences: linguistic,
interpersonal (if played in pairs)
Use:
in class as review session For: individuals
or pairs (students can play in pairs to help each other out) Estimated
time: 15 minutes Materials
needed: paper, pencil, list of terms on overhead and question
cards for instructor/MC, colored paper for markers (optional) Preparation:
use index cards to prepare approximately 32 question cards with definitions on
one side and terms on the other. Prepare a list of the same terms to display
from a projector in class. Also cut up approximately one inch squares of colored
paper to use as markers (will need 12 pieces for each student/pair). The
Activity:
-
Have each student fold
a piece of paper in half and in half again, first in one direction, then the
other so that, when opened, there are 16 squares marked off in a 4X4 grid:
-
Instructor acting as
MC displays a list of approximately 32 terms related to specific subject
being studied. Students are to randomly select any 16 terms from the list
and write each in a square on their paper, distributing them randomly (thus
creating their "bingo" board).
-
Instructor/MC reads
definitions ("clues") of each term, one by one, in random order.
Keep the cards in order as used so as to match them up later to the answers
marked to check for accuracy when there is a winner (may want to use a
pencil to mark the number on the card in the order of which they are read).
-
If a student has the
related term on their paper they will cover that term with a marker and
write the number of the clue on the marker (or just write the number
directly on the square). (the number is important for double checking that
the student matched the correct term with the appropriate definition.)
-
Play continues until
someone gets four in row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Students
can be directed to shout out a term appropriate to the subject of study when
they have four in a row. (terms e.g. "moksha" if the game relates
to Hinduism, "nirvana" if it relates to Buddhism,
"salvation" if it relates to Christianity, "Mecca" or
"Allah" for Islam, "mitzvah" for Judaism, etc.)
-
The instructor/MC
should double check the accuracy of the winner's marks. Extra credit points
can be given to winners.
Alternative
possibilities: any topic that is term heavy can use bingo to review terms.
A good review of vocabulary in a foreign language class.
