Tests and Grades

Quizzes - 20%
Exam 1 - 20%
Exam 2 - 20%
Comprehensive Final Exam - 40%

There will be no make up exams. There will be both announced and unannounced quizzes, both in class and take home. There will be no make-up quizzes and late work will not be accepted. Each quiz will receive a check for being turned in, as long as there is evidence of substantial effort. If a quiz is outstanding it will receive a check plus. If a quiz shows significant confusion or many errors, it will receive a check minus. The quiz grade will be the percentage of quizzes turned in. Periodically, there will be a bonus quiz, which can be substituted for a missing quiz; missing a bonus quiz will not diminish your total quiz grade. Homework will be assigned, but will not be collected. However, homework problems will form the major source of quiz problems and will be a guide to the exams. If your final exam score is higher than the lower of your exam 1 and exam 2 scores, then it will be substituted for the low score. If your final course grade is on the border between two grades, then your performance on quizzes, your participation in class, and your improvement during the course will be considered; that is, a demonstration of consistent progress and general understanding of mathematical ideas may raise your grade.

The grading scale for the total quiz grade, midterm exam 1, midterm exam 2,  final exam, and course grade will be:
A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 F: 0-59
If you wish to receive a "W", you must notify your professor or the registrar by the withdrawal date; no reason is necessary. After that date, in order to receive a "W", you must have a good reason, which is documented. If you begin the class and you stop attending class without notifying the registrar or your professor, you will receive an "F".

As the COVID-19 omicron variant continues to spread, NOVA has safety protocols in place to help protect our community’s health and well-being. But we also need your help.

  • Wear a face covering in class.
Any student who does not have an appropriate face covering will be offered a free, multi-layer face covering (also available at all NOVA Parking & NOVACard Offices). The primary focus of NOVA’s official Temporary COVID-19 Face Covering Policy is to encourage personal responsibility and voluntary compliance, but disciplinary action may be a possibility for refusal to wear a face covering.
  • If you cannot wear a face covering due to extenuating circumstances, such as a medical condition, work with the Office of Accommodation and Accessibility Services.
Students who are unable to wear a face covering must ask for accommodations through the Office of Accommodations and Accessibility Services. Once a Memorandum of Accommodations (MOA) is finalized, you should share the MOA with your professors.
  • NOVA strongly encourages all NOVA Nighthawks to get vaccinated.
We will continue to provide the $250 COVID vaccination incentive for NOVA students, and we will now provide an additional $75 incentive to students who receive the COVID booster. Beginning January 18, students who show their vaccination card at a NOVA Parking Office will receive the funds on their NOVACard. This can be used to pay for books, food and many other benefits and services on campus.
  • If you still need a vaccine, the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) and its vaccinating partner Red Sea Homecare Agency (RSHA) are currently offering open vaccine scheduling until June 30, 2022. RSHA is also able to administer booster shots (all manufacturers). For details on the day-to-day availability of any booster, call the Alexandria Health Department at 703-746-4996.
  • NOVA is strongly encouraging everyone who is able to get vaccinated to do so. Schedule your appointment today.
    • NEW Location: NOVA Alexandria Campus, Fine Arts Building, Room AFA–234 (Basketball Court)
    • Monday thru Friday, 2:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.
    • Walk-ins Welcome, 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.
    • Saturday by Scheduled Appointment only:  REGISTER HERE
    • Note: If the college is closed for any reason, the clinic will be closed as well.
  • Wash your hands!
You will see handwashing signs and hygiene stations in classrooms and hallways and alcohol wipes around campus, all to help keep everyone healthy. NOVA has also made improvements to indoor air quality and continues to maintain enhanced cleaning protocols. For the latest information and updates, please refer to NOVA’s COVID-19 Resources webpage: https://www.nvcc.edu/safe-campus/index.html.
  • Compassionately remind the student and offer a face covering.
If a student comes into class without a face covering, gently remind them that face coverings are required while in a NOVA building and offer them one (free face coverings will be made available in classrooms and at NOVA Parking & NOVACard Offices).Face coverings are no longer required at all public establishments, so it’s quite possible a student may forget.
  • If a student refuses to wear a face covering, politely ask them to leave the class.
For example, you could say: “NOVA’s Temporary COVID-19 Face Covering Policy requires everyone to wear a face covering indoors at our campuses and sites to help protect the campus community during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you will not wear a face covering, I will have to ask you to leave class.”
  • Refer the student to the Dean of Student Success (or their designee).
While the primary focus of NOVA’s Temporary COVID-19 Face Covering Policy is to encourage personal responsibility and voluntary compliance, students who refuse to comply should be referred to the appropriate campus Dean of Student Success (or their designee) or the Coordinator for Student Integrity and Conduct.

CLASS ATTENDANCE
Policy Number: 604
Categorized: Student
Responsible Office: Academic Deans
Subject: Policies and Procedures Governing Class Attendance by Students
Related Policies: Accommodation of Religious Observances
Procedures: N/A
Last Reviewed Date: 06/23/2020
1. Scope This applies to all registered students.
2. Policy Statement
NOVA recognizes that successful learning requires good communication between students and instructors; therefore, in most cases, regular classroom attendance, or regular participation in the case of a nontraditional course format, is essential. Faculty will identify specific class attendance policies and other requirements of the class in the syllabus that is distributed at the beginning of each term. It is the student’s responsibility to inform his/her instructor prior to an absence from class. Students are responsible for making up all coursework missed during an absence.
Administrative Deletion
If a student does not attend at least one class meeting or participate in an online learning class by the “last day to drop with a tuition refund” (census date), his/her class registration will be administratively deleted. This means that there will be no record of the class or any letter grade on the student’s transcript. Furthermore, the student’s class load will be reduced by the course credits, and this may affect his/her full-time or part-time student status. Tuition will not be refunded.
Absences Due to Illness
Students should notify their instructors in advance if possible when they will miss classes due to illness, and students should make arrangements to make up any missed work. If a College representative learns that an illness will keep a student out of classes, that person should notify the dean of students who will inform the student’s instructors.
